Caitlyn Jenner has social media meltdown after getting called out for her transphobia

Image
Transgender conservative pundit Caitlyn Jenner had a public meltdown after receiving criticism for retweeting a politician’s attack on a trans woman, railing against the “so called ‘inclusive’ lgbt community.” Last week, Jenner reposted a tweet by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) which criticized trans comedian Dylan Mulvaney’s TikTok video asking people not to stare at trans women’s crotches in public. In the video, Mulvaney celebrated her “day 74 of girlhood” and talked about wearing tight shorts and why she doesn’t want to tuck. Blackburn, who is transphobic , reposted Mulvaney’s video, writing, “Dylan Mulvaney, Joe Biden, and radical left-wing lunatics want to make this absurdity normal.” In Jenner’s retweet of Blackburn’s post, Jenner wrote, “Marsha Blackburn thank you for speaking out and having a backbone – one of the best senators we have. Let’s not ‘normalize’ any of what this person is doing. This is absurdity!” When a cisgender woman wrote to Jenner, noting that she herself

What if women could turn into werewolves & feast upon their assaulters?

Image
Women who transform into werewolves and feast upon their male assaulters. A queer high school romance. Anger, redemption, and imperfect victims. All are themes readers will encounter in Maggie Tokuda-Hall’s young adult graphic novel Squad. With both Halloween and the five-year anniversary of the Me Too movement, Squad’s subject matter is particularly timely. Tokuda-Hall wrote the story for people who, like her, have survived sexual assault. She wanted it to look survivors directly in the eye and reassure them (in her words): “That was fucked up. You deserved better. And you’re right to be fucking furious.” Through its portrayals of reactive rage, her work touches upon the important theme of the imperfect victim— a topic that the Johnny Depp Amber Heard case also brought to light recently. “You can be a shit person, make bad choices, be an enthusiastic slut, get wasted at a party where everyone is getting wasted,” Tokuda-Hall states emphatically. “That doesn’t mean you deserve to

Conservative pundits call for contestants to boycott Miss Universe now that a trans woman owns it

Image
A conservative pundit said that Miss Universe contestants should be afraid of participating in the pageant now that it’s owned by a transgender businesswoman, saying that there will be “pedophile activity” at the pageant now. Alison Steinberg of the OAN show Alison at Large made the accusation while discussing how Thai tycoon Jakapong Jakrajutatip just bought the pageant , which was once owned by Donald Trump. “It’s just pathetic,” Steinberg said, misgendering Jakrajutatip and referring to her as “it” and “he.” “These people obviously know that that’s not actually a woman. They’re delusional, they’ve convinced themselves that it is. And then they send all this praise his way.” “I’m so sick of the BS here. Just admit that it’s a man, there’s nothing special here. It’s actually more concerning that a man who dresses as a woman owns it.” “And all of the women who enter the contest should be concerned, because this is clearly… You know, probably pedophile activity going on behind th

Gay conservative pleads guilty to homophobic death threats against Congressman

Image
A Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty to making death threats to Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and members of his staff. Joshua Hall, 22, pleaded guilty to one count of making interstate communications with a threat to injure and faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison. He had previously pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud in relation to a fake fundraising organization, Gay Voices for Trump. Hall admitted to impersonating Trump family members on social media, including the former president’s son Barron and late brother Robert, in an effort to defraud donors. In a statement, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of the Southern District of New York said that Hall had “made terrifying threats to the staff of a United States Congressman whom he disliked rather than attempting to effect change through any of the freedoms of expression that all Americans enjoy. These threats of violence endanger our public officials and thwart common decency.” According to a Justice Department releas

Antisemitic flyers accuse Jewish Disney executives of supporting child “grooming”

Image
Residents of Brentwood, California received antisemitic fliers accusing Disney’s top executives of being Jewish and grooming children for sexual abuse. “Every single aspect of Disney child grooming is Jewish,” the flier reads. The flier had two rainbow-colored symbols: a Jewish Star of David and a Satanic inverted pentagram. It also included the names, job positions, and pictures of 10 Disney executives, each with a blue Star of David printed on their foreheads. “Protect your children,” the flier said repeatedly in red, all-capital letters. The fliers were likely inspired by Disney’s opposition to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) in late March. DeSantis’ press secretary Christina Pushaw said anyone who opposes the law supports pedophilia . It’s unclear if the Disney executives shown on the flier are all actually Jewish. Two similarly designed fliers found elsewhere in Brentwood accused President Joe Biden of appointing Jews to top government positions

Grappling with John Updike’s homophobia in “The Witches of Eastwick”

Image
The Witches of Eastwick is probably my all-time favorite novel—but it’s an extremely problematic fave. It’s a John Updike novel, after all, and Updike was…not great when it came to depictions of women or queer people, or really anyone other than straight cis white men. He wrote a notoriously homophobic review of out author Andrew Hollinghurst’s novel The Spell , and The Witches of Eastwick was essentially written as a response to his feminist critics who objected to the portrayals of female characters as merely wives, mistresses, and generally as characters who exist only in relation to the male protagonists in much of his work. His “very determined attempt to write about women who did have careers of a sort,” as he described the book in 1988, backfired, however. New York Times book critic Michiko Kakutani wrote that it read more like an attack on “liberated” women than an earnest portrayal. The Witches of Eastwick reads more like a satire of feminism than a feminist satire. De

Jonathan Van Ness shares details of his struggle with eating disorder

Queer Eye ’s Jonathan Van Ness has opened up about his struggle with binge eating. The Netflix reality series’ grooming expert recently posted on Instagram about his journey toward a healthier relationship with food . The post features side-by-side videos of Van Ness doing a back flip, with a caption explaining how gymnastics has been integral to his journey.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Jonathan Van Ness (@jvn) “Always been a hot & sexy slut but have also been struggling with binge eating disorder at the same time for a very long time,” he writes. “In April after years of feeling out of control with food I got help. Gymnastics is a huge source of joy for me, and I want to do it for as long and safely as possible.” In August, Van Ness posted a video on TikTok describing how he’d lost 35 pounds after hiring a nutritionist in April. In the clip, he acknowledged that talking about weight loss can be tricky and trigger

Spooky Season calls for the queer kitchen witchery of “cauldron cooking”

Image
Most holidays—those that have their roots in religious festivals and things like that—tend to have specific foods associated with them. Turkey and all the trimmings at Thanksgiving; ham (or also turkey) at Christmas; black-eyed peas and other vaguely coin-shaped foods at New Year’s; lamb (or also ham) and eggs and hot cross buns at Easter. And these are just the big, obvious, vaguely secularized American holidays. And I suppose Halloween has its associated “foods” as well: candy corn, caramel apples, all manner of fun-size chocolate bars. Candy, generally—if you consider that “food,” which… eeeeh? But actually, for the last few years, as October 31 approaches and the leaves change and the temperature dips, I’ve found myself gravitating to a seasonal type of cooking that I’ve come to think of as “cauldron cooking.” Warming, hearty things you can put in a big pot or pan and let bubble away on the stove. Stews, basically, but also soups and hot drinks. Groundbreaking, right? But while

Young gay couple jumps to their deaths after posting final photos together on Instagram

Image
A young gay couple jumped to their deaths from a bridge in Armenia last week, after posting a series of photos together on Instagram and tagging them “Happy End.” The last photo shows the couple sharing a final kiss. The tragic post went viral, and continues to draw thousands of comments, tributes, and even threats. The young men, named on social media as Arsen and Tigran, leaped from the 301-foot Davitashen Bridge in the capital of Yerevan on the evening of October 20. Arsen was reportedly 16 or 17, and Tigran a few years older. The post to Instagram read: “Happy End. Decisions about sharing photos and our next steps were taken by both of us together.” “The young men still had many years of life ahead of them, but because of intolerance towards them, they took such a tragic step,” said advocacy group Pink Armenia , following the double suicide. Local news reports and social media claimed the couple’s parents were opposed to the relationship, and the pair received death threats. “

Herschel Walker just gave the worst definition of a “man” yet

Image
Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker had a hard time defining the word “man” last week during a campaign appearance. For the past year, Republicans have tried to get liberals to define the word “woman,” often getting upset when they’re told that gender isn’t about genitalia. The few Republicans who tried to define the word themselves didn’t do a good job either , with some – like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO) – relying entirely on misogyny. But few Republicans have asked what a “man” is or provided a definition themselves. Until last week. Walker was having a friendly discussion with Rock Springs Church’s Pastor Benny Tate in Milner, Georgia, and he started making fun of transgender people, comparing living one’s life authentically to identifying as a cat. “I’ve preached here 32 years, and I’ve always said, you got a man, you got a woman, womb-man,” Tate replied. “If you don’t know what you are, if you have a womb, you’re a woman.” Walker

Mary Lambert’s fall-themed, gender-defying wedding photos will make your day

Singer Mary Lambert and partner Wyatt Paige Hermansen tied the knot over the weekend. The ceremony, which took place in Oakland, Maine, on October 22, took advantage of the New England setting for a warm autumnal vibe. The couple, who have been together for over four years, shared their wedding photos with People Magazine . Mary Lambert and Wyatt Paige Hermansen's Romantic New England Wedding: All the Photos https://t.co/d9Udto9E8D — People (@people) October 24, 2022 As Lambert and Hermansen, who is a professor, explained that they eschewed traditional wedding party labels in favor of more playful, queerer, and less gendered roles. They dubbed themselves the “bride and broom,” with “broomsmaids” and “bridesbabes” replacing groomsmen and bridesmaids, and “captain” and “president” instead of a maid of honor and best man. “We thought it was really cute and funny,” Lambert said. “We were trying to find other couples like us in bridal magazines and I just didn’t see it. University accused of creating “sham” LGBTQ club after banning one that already existed

Image
Amidst an ongoing legal battle between the Orthodox Jewish Yeshiva University and the YU Pride Alliance – an LGBTQ group it refused to recognize – Yeshiva has announced the creation of its own LGBTQ group. Yeshiva claims The Kol Yisrael Areivim Club supports LGBTQ students while remaining in line with Orthodox Jewish beliefs, allowing LGBTQ students to explore their identities “within the Torah framework,” according to senior counsel and vice president at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty Eric Baxter. But in a statement to  The Hill , the YU Pride Alliance called this a “sham” and a “desperate stunt” to distract the school’s critics, especially because the club does not have any members and wasn’t formed by students. “It is a feeble attempt by YU to continue denying LGBTQ students equal treatment as full members of the YU student community,” the group said. A letter from the school to students and faculty reportedly explained that the university-sanctioned club “will provide

GOP airs ad with hate pastor who called LGBTQ people “child molesters”

Image
Kari Lake, the Republican running for governor of Arizona, is airing an ad starring fundamentalist Desert Bible Church pastor Justin Erickson. In the ad, Erickson is identified as a small business owner, although the ad doesn’t say what his business is. He complains about inflation, which he blames on Democratic candidate Katie Hobbs. In a 2014 sermon, Erickson claimed that “50 percent of the homosexual LGBT-Now-Q community, 50 percent have AIDS.” Later he said, “80 percent of homosexuals have STDs and – how sad is this? – two percent, two percent of homosexuals in the LGBT community make it to the age of 65. The average lifespan for an average person in our world is 75. Those in the LGBT community, most of them don’t make it to 39.” He also made up numbers about promiscuity: “The average homosexual has had in a lifetime over 500 sexual partners. Eighty percent admit that half of them are absolute total strangers. Thirty percent of those who commit homosexuality, 30 percent, have
