A six-second video of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) calling LibsofTikTok creator Chaya Raichik “super transphobic” to her face has gone viral, receiving over 3.5 million views on Twitter in fewer than 24 hours. The context leading up to the video helps explain what occurs in it. This week, the anti-LGBTQ+ think tank Heritage Foundation asked the Office of Congressional Ethics to investigate Ocasio-Cortez for “intentionally defaming” Raichik and “falsely accusing her of lying and disseminating disinformation” during a February 8 hearing of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. The spotlight of trans visibility is dimmer this year

Image
Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV) is meant to be a celebration for the transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) community. When this day was first conceived, the hope was that every March 31 st the TGNB community would celebrate their lives and accomplishments and at the same time draw attention to the discrimination and violence the community faces. But for many in recent years, especially trans and nonbinary youth, this day can be one of mixed feelings due to increasing legislative opposition.   Related Stories Here are all the anti-trans bills that have become law in 2023 Republican lawmakers have worked round the clock to pass oppressive bills targeting gender-affirming care, bathroom usage, drag shows, and trans students. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) ongoing legal battle with Disney is set to cost the state’s taxpayers $1,300 per hour in addition to the millions it has already cost to defend his extreme agenda in court. According to Business Insider , the DeSantis administration has contracted two outside law firms to pursue a legal challenge to a maneuver on the part of the entertainment giant to strip the governor’s hand-picked Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board of much of its power. Donald Trump’s indictment ties Republicans closer to him than ever

Image
Donald Trump’s indictment yesterday was a long time in the making – like 50 years in the making. Trump’s past is littered with a steady stream of legally questionable activities. They began, appropriately enough given his thinly veiled racist campaign rhetoric, with accusations that he and his father broke the law by refusing to rent to Black people and continued right through his frantic efforts to perpetrate voter fraud so he could stay in office. That Trump was indicted for hush payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels is fitting. It’s the perfect combination of Trump’s vulgarity with his use of money to deny it. Related Stories Disney pulled a fast one on Ron DeSantis & now everyone is mocking him “Ron DeSantis just got out-negotiated by Mickey Mouse,” a Trump advisor said. North Dakota’s GOP governor vetos anti-transgender pronoun bill

Image
North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) vetoed a bill that would’ve forbidden school districts from adopting any transgender-inclusive policies without first notifying parents. The bill would’ve outed trans students to their parents if the students wanted to be addressed correctly, and the state’s Republican-led legislature may not have enough votes to override Burgum’s veto. S.B. 2231 , sponsored by state Sen. Larry Luick (R), would have forbidden any schools from accommodating trans students in any way — including allowing them to use facilities and pronouns matching their gender identities — without first notifying and receiving permission from the students’ families. As such, the bill would have essentially required teachers to out trans students to their potentially unaccepting parents if the students sought any recognition or comfort at school. In the past, Aniston said, “you could joke about a bigot and have a laugh — that was hysterical. And it was about educating people on how ridiculous people were.
