Republican support for marriage equality drops as conservatives ramp up anti-trans panic

Image
A new Gallup poll found that support for same-sex couples having the right to marry has dropped over the past two years among Republicans, with only a minority of GOP voters supporting marriage equality now when a majority of the GOP supported it in 2022. This may be a result of the mass anti-trans and “groomer” panic over the past several years. In 2021 and 2022, Gallup found that 55% of Republicans supported marriage equality. In 2023, the number dropped to 49%, and this year, in data that has just been released , Gallup found that only 46% of Republicans support marriage equality. Related 7.6% of adults in the U.S. now identify as LGBTQ+ according to poll According to Gallup, demographic trends indicate that LGBTQ+ people could account for more than 10% of U.S. adults in the next three years. Yulia Alyoshina, a transgender Russian politician, announced last month that they were detransitioning. In an interview published on Thursday with Novaya Gazeta Baltiya , they revealed that they were forced to undergo this detransition due to threats of being sent to a psychiatric hospital. Alyoshina, who will be referred to with they/them pronouns as it is not currently clear what English pronouns they currently prefer, had sought help from the Russian Supreme Court asking whether they had a right to exist as a transgender person. Earlier today, the Supreme Court announced that it will hear a case about a ban on gender-affirming care for trans minors in Tennessee. The case, United States v. Skrmetti , concerns three families affected by Tennessee’s 2023 gender-affirming care ban, S.B. 1 . The bill restricts all gender-affirming care for transgender minors, imposing civil penalties on doctors who don’t follow it. The Supreme Court will decide on this case in the fall during the presidential election. Christian nationalists are opening private schools. Taxpayers are funding them.

Earlier this month,  former President Donald Trump held his first campaign rally as a convicted felon at Dream City Church in Phoenix, Arizona,  hosted  by the arch-conservative student group Turning Point USA. This wasn’t Trump’s first appearance at Dream City Church; he also  held  a rally there with Turning Point USA in 2020. For events like this, it’s an ideal venue: A weekly attendance of around 21,000 believers makes this one of the  largest  churches not just in Arizona but in the nation. Dream City, which didn’t respond to my questions for this story, is a mecca for special guests who blur the line between religion and politics. There’s a clear connection between Nazism & anti-abortion, anti-gay conservatism

While serving as features editor between 1980 and 1981 for the Boston-based Gay Community News – a progressive national publication – I received a telephone call from Margaret Lazarus, co-director of Cambridge Documentary Films, Inc. located across the Charles River. She explained to me that she and her husband, co-director Renner Wunderlich, had been making documentary films on several topics for classroom use. They were now very much interested in producing a film about homophobia. She asked whether I would like to join a production team and whether I knew others who were knowledgeable and interested in such a project. In a recent Rolling Stone article based on interviews with 18 former contestants who are members of the LGBTQ+ community, several suggested that the show set them up for ridicule because of their perceived sexual identity and gender expression.
