Lauren Boebert & Marjorie Taylor Greene join forces to attack gay teacher

Image
Screenshot/Jim Lambert via Shutterstock Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) yesterday attacked a Canadian teacher for being gay on her Twitter account, which has 1.4 million followers. Sharing a video that was posted on Twitter by Brooklyn realtor and anti-LGBTQ activist Chaya Raichik, Boebert wrote: "Why we need school choice, explained in less than a minute." The teacher has a lot of rainbow colors in his classroom, and he turns off his lights to show some of the LED lights he set up. There's a Canadian flag clearly visible because he teaches in Canada. Boebert didn't block out the teacher's TikTok handle, which could explain why he turned off comments on his account. Raichik (who goes by "Libs of TikTok" on Twitter) wrote that the teacher is "also a drag queen." She doesn't say why that's bad; ma...

Pete Buttigieg eviscerates Marco Rubio’s snide comments about marriage equality

Image
Screenshot Out Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg was asked about how the majority of House Republicans opposed last week's Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) bill and about Sen. Marco Rubio's (R-FL) claim that the bill was a "stupid waste of time ." "If [Rubio's] got time to fight against Disney, I don't know why he wouldn't have time to help safeguard marriages like mine. Look, this is really, really important to a lot of people. It's certainly important to me," Buttigieg said on CNN's State of the Union this weekend. Buttigieg went on to talk about his weekend, saying that he "tried to give [his husband] Chasten a little bit of a break" by feeding their twin babies at breakfast "That's no small thing, as eve...

The 47 House Republicans who supported marriage equality aren’t a sign the party is changing

Image
AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin One of the unexpected bits of news last week was the surprisingly large number of Republican representatives who voted in favor of the Congressional Respect for Marriage Act, which would protect the right to marry for same-sex couples. While 157 Republicans voted against the bill, 47 Republicans supported it, a far larger number than anyone anticipated. Even though the overall GOP vote was 2-1 against the bill, the media seized on the minority vote as a sign of a sea change in the party. "GOP support for same-sex marriage bill reflects a shift among Republican voters," NBC news declared.  And it is true that even a majority of Republican voters now say that they support marriage equality, although at a far lower rate than the general American population. Instagram Even now, with so much LGBTQ representation on the big and small screens, certain types of queer people still go unseen. That's why Col Connelly and Ari Garcia have spent their last few years documenting their lives together on social media. Col and Ari — an engaged, non-binary, transgender lesbian couple in their mid-20s — have used their social media to share their passions — like traveling, selling "pre-loved" fashions, and decorating their new home. But their followers know that they're not just sharing their hobbies, they're also sharing intimate details of their own gender journeys, including their use of hormone therapy, the discomfort they've felt in varying their gender presentation, and Ari's top surgery. "Our #1 goal behind this account is to normalize queer joy," the couple wrote on their Instagram. "We don’t often see ourselves depicted in popular culture, so we decided to be the representation we ourselves craved....

Australia, Europe & Asia host a vast array of LGBTQ leaders. Meet some of them now

Image
Shutterstock To talk about Australia, Europe and Asia in the same breath is difficult. One of the land masses is enormous, a continent and country in one, pushing alone toward the south pole. Europe, on the other hand, is a conglomeration of nations and city-states which has staked a contentious claim to being the center of civilization for more than a thousand years. Between the two is magnanimous Asia with its vast cultural underpinnings. Yet, despite significant geographical and linguistic differences, the three continents share at least one strong bond – a dedication to equity and equality for LGBTQ+ people. Subscribe to our newsletter to stay up-to-date with the latest LGBTQ news Australia Australia’s march toward guaranteeing rights for LGBTQ people began with several pushes and pulls, not truly gaining momentum until the last decade.  But, by 2016, most states and territories passed legislation allowing for gender marker changes on birth certificates, and in 2017 the cou...

What does ‘AMAB’ & ‘AFAB’ mean?

Image

Here, we break down the meaning and importance of the terms AMAB and AFAB. Related: What does it mean to identify as agender? Sex vs Gender Sex and gender are two independent components of our identities. Sex is a label that is assigned to you based on your sex characteristics. In contrast, your gender identity is your innermost conception of your maleness or femaleness – it’s how you feel inside. AMAB (and AFAB) are inclusive descriptors that are meant to emphasize that, as children, we are  assigned  a sex based solely on external characteristics. However, this label is incomplete, as your gender identity and expression are parts of your identity that only you can determine for yo...
